A birthday gift: the sunrise over the place they were born

Birthdays reward thought more than budget. One quiet way to show it is to connect the day to the place where the person began: the town, the hospital, the family house where they were born. A sunrise over that place, dedicated to them, does exactly that.
Why the birthplace
Most adults no longer live where they were born. Many have not been back in years. The birthplace still has a hold on people: it shows up on documents, in family stories, in the accent they never quite lost. A gift that points back to it says that you know where they come from, and it often prompts a conversation they enjoy having.
If the birthplace is far away, the sunrise there happens at an unfamiliar hour on their clock, which can be part of the charm. A sunrise in Manila at 05:50 falls in the evening of the previous day in New York. You can tell them the exact moment and let them decide whether to be awake for it.
Timing it for the birthday
With The Sunrise you choose the day: pick the birthday itself, and the dedicated sunrise is that morning’s sunrise at the point you choose. The wizard shows the exact local time before you pay, so you can check it lands on the right morning, and you can order it weeks ahead. If the birthday sunrise has already gone, the morning after makes a fine “first sunrise of their new year of life”.
Choosing the point
- The hospital or the house, if you know it. The map lets you pin a precise point.
- The town centre, if not. The time changes only slightly within a town.
- A place with a view, if it fits better: a harbour, a hill, the church square.
The point cannot be changed after payment, so take a moment to get it right.
Writing the message
The dedication on The Sunrise can carry up to 240 characters. Some ideas that work:
- the date and place of birth, and a wish for the year;
- a family nickname;
- “The sun still rises over Valletta. Happy birthday.”

What time it will be for them
A birthplace sunrise often falls at an odd hour wherever the person lives now, and it can even fall on a different calendar day. Calculated for a few real pairs:
- A sunrise in Manila at 06:04 on Sunday 14 March 2027 is 17:04 on Saturday 13 March in New York.
- A sunrise in Mumbai at 06:00 on 5 June 2027 is 01:30 the same night in London.
- A sunrise in Valletta at 07:09 on 20 January 2027 is 01:09 in Toronto.
- A sunrise in Auckland at 06:59 on Saturday 1 May 2027 is 11:59 on Friday 30 April in Los Angeles.
The gift page always shows the moment in the local time of the place, which is the honest way to describe it: the sun rose in Manila at 06:04. The recipient’s own clock is a detail, but a useful one when you plan a call or a message for that minute. A sunrise that happens on the evening before their birthday where they live can become part of the celebration: a toast at five in the afternoon, at the moment it is morning in the town where they were born.
How much the time moves day to day
Around the equinoxes the sunrise time changes quickly. In London it comes about two and a half minutes earlier each day in late March, and almost two minutes later each day in late October. Around the solstices it hardly moves: in the days before Christmas the change is well under a minute, and around 20 June a few seconds. So for a birthday in spring or autumn the exact minute differs noticeably from the day before; in midsummer or midwinter the time is nearly the same for a week.
Birthdays in polar places
For someone born in the far north, a winter birthday may fall in the polar night. In Tromsø there is no sunrise at all from late November to mid-January. The Sunrise is then the first sunrise after the polar night, possibly weeks away, and the wizard says so before payment. For a midsummer birthday in the same places, there is no sunset, but there is no sunrise either, because the sun never goes down: a sunset or sunrise only exists where the sun crosses the horizon. In those cases a full moon night, or a moment at another place in their story, is the better gift.
Adding to it on the day
A dedicated sunrise works well on its own, but it also pairs with small things that cost little: a photograph of the birthplace from the family archive, a local food from that town, a printed map with the point marked. Some people time a message to arrive at the minute of the sunrise; others simply send the gift page the evening before, with the countdown running, so the person can watch the time tick down toward a morning in the place where they began.
For a new baby
For a newborn, the more fitting gift is the first sunrise of their life, calculated from the time and place of birth. That is a different calculation, and it comes with a premium certificate-poster for the nursery.
You can pin a birthplace and see the exact time of The Sunrise there; for a baby, see Your First Sunrise.
