Wedding gift lists tend to be practical: kitchen equipment, linen, contributions toward a trip. They are useful and welcome. Alongside them, a small number of guests look for something that refers to the marriage itself rather than to the household. The first full moon night of a marriage is one of those.

What it is

The moon is full roughly every 29.5 days. So within a month of any wedding, sometimes within days, there is a first full moon. At the place where the couple married, that full moon has a particular night, from sunset to sunrise, and that night belongs to the first weeks of their marriage.

Resthe finds it with a fixed rule:

  1. Take the wedding date and place.
  2. Find the first full moon night on or after that date. A full moon night is the local night whose middle is closest to the astronomical moment of full moon.
  3. Record the night, the exact moment of full moon and the moon’s illuminated fraction.

If the wedding itself fell on a full moon night, that night is the first.

Before or after the wedding

Because the moment is always calculated forward, the gift can be given before the wedding as well as after. Entering a future wedding date works; you confirm that the moment is calculated from the date you entered. Guests who like to send gifts ahead of the day often prefer this.

If the wedding was some time ago and its first full moon has already passed, the product will not offer it: Resthe never sells a moment that has already happened. For an older wedding, an Anniversary Sunrise on the next anniversary is the closer fit.

Engagements too

The same calculation works from an engagement date, for couples who prefer to mark the proposal. The certificate says which reference date was used.

The certificate

The gift is recorded in the private Resthe registry with the couple’s names and an optional message of up to 140 characters. It comes with a gift page to share and a premium certificate-poster in A4, A3, US Letter or 11×14, with the night, the place and the moment of full moon. Cloud on the night itself does not change anything: the moment is calculated, not observed.

Examples for this autumn

For a wedding in Europe or North America in the coming weeks, the first full moon nights fall like this:

The exact night depends on the place: the rule picks, for each point, the night whose middle is closest to the moment of full moon.

A moon for the honeymoon

The word honeymoon has been in English since the sixteenth century; the “moon” in it refers to the month, the first sweet month of a marriage. A first full moon night falls, by definition, within about a month of the wedding, often during the honeymoon itself. Some couples like to be away when it rises: a beach facing east, a terrace in the hills. Others are home by then and step into the garden. The moment is recorded either way.

What the guests see

For a wedding gift, the gift page arrives at once, before the moment itself. It shows the couple’s names, the place, the night, a countdown and the premium certificate-poster. Guests often send it with a note in the wedding card, or forward it after the wedding when the couple are back. A shared gift from a group of friends works well too: one dedication, several names in the “from” line, one message of up to 140 characters.

If the wedding is abroad

Many weddings now happen far from home: a villa in Tuscany, a beach in Bali, a garden in the Cotswolds. The first full moon night is calculated for the place you pin, so pin the wedding venue, not the couple’s home. The certificate gives the night in local time at that place, which keeps the memory where it belongs.

When clouds cover the moon

Weather is the one thing nobody controls. If the first full moon night is cloudy, the moment still happened: the full moon reached its exact instant over the place, at the time on the certificate, as it does every month. Couples sometimes like that part best. Their moment does not depend on the forecast, only on the date they chose and the sky above the place where they married. A clear night is a bonus, not a condition.

A note on the far north

At high latitudes in summer there may be no night at all, and therefore no full moon night until the sun begins to set again. For a midsummer wedding in northern Norway or Iceland, the site shows before payment when the first full moon night falls, or whether one is available in the product window.

Our First Full Moon Night is calculated from the wedding or engagement date and place you enter.
