Boudhanath is one of the largest stupas in the world and the centre of Tibetan Buddhism in the Kathmandu Valley. Its white dome is crowned by a golden tower painted with the eyes of the Buddha, looking out in all four directions.

Every morning and evening, pilgrims walk clockwise around the stupa, turning the prayer wheels set in its walls. At sunrise the prayer flags strung from the top catch the light and the whole square smells of butter lamps and incense; at sunset the dome turns gold and the walking becomes slower and quieter.

A sunrise over Boudhanath is a gift of peace — a moment shared with thousands of people who begin each day by walking in a circle and wishing the world well.

The best season

October and November bring the clearest skies of the year, with the Himalaya sometimes visible from the valley. Spring is warm and hazy; the monsoon from June to September is green and wet.

Where to watch

The rooftop cafés around the square look down onto the dome and the prayer flags. Sunrise light reaches the golden spire first.
