Milford Sound is a fiord in the south-west of New Zealand’s South Island, carved by glaciers and filled by the sea. Cliffs rise almost straight up from the water for more than a kilometre, and waterfalls pour off them after rain.

Mitre Peak stands over the fiord like a sharp pyramid. In the early morning the water is often perfectly still, and the first light touches the peak while the sound is still in deep shadow. Rain is common, and after it hundreds of temporary waterfalls appear on the walls.

A sunrise over Milford Sound is a gift of wilderness — one of the wettest, wildest and most beautiful places on the planet.

The best season

Summer, December to February, has the longest days and the most visitors. Rain falls on most days of the year, and the waterfalls are at their best just after it; winter brings snow on the peaks.

Where to watch

The foreshore walk near the boat terminal looks across the water to Mitre Peak. A morning cruise goes all the way to the Tasman Sea.

It changes by a minute or two every day. This page calculates today’s sunrise and sunset live for the exact point (44.6414° S, 167.8974° E), in local time (Pacific/Auckland), with the same rules as the almanacs: the moment the upper edge of the sun clears the horizon.
