Mount Fuji is Japan’s highest mountain, an almost perfectly symmetrical volcano 3,776 metres above sea level, rising high over the lakes and towns around it. It has been painted, climbed and worshipped for centuries, and it is a symbol of Japan itself.

Seen from Fujiyoshida and the Five Lakes, the sunrise lights the snow cap pink before the valley is awake; when the sun rises exactly over the summit it is called Diamond Fuji. In the evening the mountain turns into a dark cone against an orange sky, often reflected in the still water of the lakes.

A sunrise over Mount Fuji is a gift of something timeless — the most famous mountain in Japan, and the light reaching its summit first.

The best season

Late autumn and winter, from October to February, bring the clearest views and a snowy summit. In summer the mountain is often hidden by cloud, and the climbing season is open in July and August.

Where to watch

The Chureito Pagoda above Fujiyoshida and the shores of Lake Kawaguchi face the mountain directly. Lake Yamanaka is known for Diamond Fuji sunsets in winter.
