Antoni Gaudí began the Sagrada Família in 1883 and worked on it until his death in 1926. Construction has continued ever since, funded by visitors, and its towers have grown taller decade by decade over Barcelona’s Eixample.

The basilica was designed around light. The Nativity façade faces east toward the sunrise, and the Passion façade faces west toward the sunset. Inside, the stained glass on the eastern side glows blue and green in the morning, and the western windows burn red and orange late in the day.

A sunrise over the Sagrada Família is a gift for someone who sees beauty in patience: a building still being finished, and a sun that rises over it every single morning regardless.

The best season

Barcelona has mild light all year. Spring and autumn give clear mornings without summer heat; winter sunrises are late and golden, and summer sunsets over the city last until almost ten.

Where to watch

The pond on Plaça de Gaudí reflects the Nativity façade, which faces the sunrise. For sunset, the Bunkers del Carmel hill shows the towers above the city as the sun goes down behind them.
