A gift for a new baby: the first sunrise of their life

New parents receive a lot of things in the first weeks: clothes that fit for a month, toys that arrive before the baby can hold them, flowers that last a week. The gifts that stay are usually the ones tied to the child’s own story, a name, a date, a place. The first sunrise of a child’s life belongs to that category.

The first morning of their life

A baby born at 03:40 in Lisbon saw no sunrise on the day before, and every sunrise in the city from that morning on was one they were alive for. The first of them, at a specific minute over the hospital where they were born, is a moment no other person has in quite the same way. Two children born in the same city on the same night share it; a child born ten minutes after sunrise has to wait until the next morning for theirs.

How the moment is found

The calculation needs three things: the place of birth, the date, and either the time of birth or simply whether the baby arrived before or after sunrise that day.

  1. The local time of birth is converted to universal time using the historical time-zone rules of the place, including daylight saving time on that date.
  2. Starting from that instant, the next sunrise at the place is found with the standard rule: the upper edge of the sun crossing an ideal horizon, with refraction of 0.833°.
  3. The result is shown in local time at the place of birth.

If the exact time of birth is not known, choosing “before sunrise” or “after sunrise” is enough: it decides whether the first sunrise is the same morning or the next one.

Why a future date works too

A first sunrise can be given before the baby is born. If you enter an expected date, the moment is calculated from the date and time you enter, and you confirm that you understand this before paying. It suits grandparents who want the gift ready for the day, or friends who prefer to send it when the news arrives.

Polar exceptions

For a birth inside the Arctic or Antarctic Circle during polar night, the first sunrise can be weeks away; during the midnight sun, the sun has not set, so the first sunrise comes when it next dips below the horizon and rises again. The calculation handles both cases, and if the first sunrise is further away than the product allows, you see that before paying.

What you need to know before ordering

A worked example

Suppose a baby is born in Lisbon at 03:40 on a spring night. The sun has not yet risen that morning, so the first sunrise of the child’s life is the same morning’s sunrise over Lisbon, a few hours later. A baby born in the same hospital at 09:15 has already missed that day’s sunrise; their first is the next morning. Two children born on the same date can therefore have first sunrises a day apart, each recorded to the minute.

Time zones and daylight saving

Birth times are written in local clock time, which can include summer time. The calculation converts the local time with the rules that were in force on that date at that place, so a birth at 02:30 on a night when the clocks change is handled correctly. If a local time does not exist that night, because the clocks jumped forward past it, the wizard asks for a valid time.

Giving it to the family

Most people send the gift page link to the parents by message once mother and baby are home, when the first rush of visitors has passed. Grandparents abroad sometimes order it on the day of the birth and send it as their first gift. A first sunrise that is still ahead gives the family something to look forward to, with the certificate ready from the start; one that has already passed by the time you order cannot be dedicated, since Resthe only sells moments still to come.

A gift for the parents, kept for the child

Parents often keep the certificate for the child rather than for themselves. Framed in the nursery, it is a small piece of the child’s own history; later it can go into a memory box with the hospital bracelet and the first photographs.

What the gift contains

The first sunrise is recorded in the private Resthe registry with the child’s name, the place and the exact time. Parents receive a gift page they can share with family, and a premium certificate-poster in A4, A3, US Letter or 11×14 to frame for the nursery.

It is a quiet gift. It does not need batteries, it does not get outgrown, and in twenty years it will still say where and when that first morning happened. Your First Sunrise is calculated from the place and time of birth you enter.
