Christ the Redeemer stands on the summit of Corcovado, 700 metres above Rio de Janeiro. Completed in 1931, the statue stretches its arms 28 metres wide over the city, the bays and the beaches below.

From the city, the statue is visible from almost everywhere, especially when it catches the first light at sunrise over Guanabara Bay. In the evening the sun sets behind the mountains of the Tijuca forest, and the statue stands in silhouette before it is lit for the night.

A sunrise over Christ the Redeemer is a gift of open arms — the whole of Rio waking up below them.

The best season

The southern winter, from May to September, brings drier, clearer days. Summer, December to March, is hot and humid, with clouds that often wrap the summit in the afternoon.

Where to watch

Sugarloaf Mountain across the bay faces Corcovado and the statue. Arpoador rock between Ipanema and Copacabana is Rio’s favourite place to applaud the sunset.
