The Perito Moreno Glacier flows down from the Southern Patagonian Ice Field into Lake Argentino, near El Calafate. Its face is about five kilometres wide and rises some seventy metres above the water.

It is one of the few glaciers in the world that is not shrinking. Huge blocks of ice break off its face with a sound like thunder and crash into the lake. At sunrise the ice turns pink and gold; in daylight it glows deep blue where it is cracked.

A sunrise over the Perito Moreno Glacier is a gift of something ancient and alive — a river of ice still moving forward every day.

The best season

The southern summer, November to March, brings long days with sunrise before six. Autumn colours the forests around the lake in April; winter is cold and quiet, with short days.

Where to watch

The walkways on the Magallanes Peninsula face the glacier directly across a narrow channel of the lake.

Questions

What time is sunrise at the Perito Moreno Glacier today?

It changes by a minute or two every day. This page calculates today’s sunrise and sunset live for the exact point (50.4967° S, 73.1377° W), in local time (America/Argentina/Rio_Gallegos), with the same rules as the almanacs: the moment the upper edge of the sun clears the horizon.

Can I dedicate the sunrise at the Perito Moreno Glacier to someone?

Yes. Choose The Sunrise, The Sunset or The Full Moon Night with this place, the nearest one or on the day you choose: it is dedicated to the person you name, they receive a gift page with a live countdown, and the certificate with the exact minute of the moment is ready right after payment.

What if it is cloudy?

The sun rises and sets whatever the weather. The certificate records the real astronomical moment, and the gift page tells the story of the sky at that minute.

Is the Perito Moreno Glacier growing?

It has stayed roughly stable for decades, unlike most glaciers in the world, gaining about as much ice as it loses.

Why is the glacier ice blue?

Dense, old ice absorbs red light and lets blue through, so deep cracks and fresh breaks glow blue.
