The Mutianyu section of the Great Wall runs along forested ridges about seventy kilometres north of Beijing. Rebuilt in the sixteenth century under the Ming dynasty, it has watchtowers close together and views over steep green hills.

In the morning the wall climbs the ridges in front of the rising sun, and the towers stand out one after another against the pale sky. In autumn the hills turn red and gold; in winter, a light snow outlines the wall across the mountains.

A sunrise over the Great Wall is a gift about distance and endurance — a line of stone stretching over the hills as the day begins.

The best season

Autumn, from September to early November, has the clearest air and the brightest colours. Spring brings blossom; winter can be cold and very clear, sometimes with snow.

Where to watch

The higher watchtowers along the ridge look east over the hills for sunrise. Late in the afternoon, the wall glows gold with the sun behind it to the west.
