Uluru is a great sandstone monolith in the red centre of Australia, rising about 348 metres above the desert plain. It is sacred to the Anangu, its traditional owners, whose stories about the land are written into every cave and crease of the rock.
Uluru is famous for changing colour. In the minutes around sunrise and sunset it turns from dark purple to blazing orange and deep red, depending on the angle of the light, the dust in the air and the clouds. Many people watch both in one day.
A sunrise at Uluru is a gift from the heart of a continent — one of the oldest landscapes on Earth, waking up in colour.
The best season
May to September is the cooler, dry season, with crisp desert mornings. Summer days are very hot; after rare rain, the desert turns green and waterfalls run off the rock.
Where to watch
The Talinguru Nyakunytjaku viewing area faces the rock and Kata Tjuta at sunrise. The sunset viewing area to the west shows the full length of Uluru turning red.

Questions
What time is sunrise at Uluru today?
It changes by a minute or two every day. This page calculates today’s sunrise and sunset live for the exact point (25.3444° S, 131.0369° E), in local time (Australia/Darwin), with the same rules as the almanacs: the moment the upper edge of the sun clears the horizon.
Can I dedicate the sunrise at Uluru to someone?
Yes. Choose The Sunrise, The Sunset or The Full Moon Night with this place, the nearest one or on the day you choose: it is dedicated to the person you name, they receive a gift page with a live countdown, and the certificate with the exact minute of the moment is ready right after payment.
What if it is cloudy?
The sun rises and sets whatever the weather. The certificate records the real astronomical moment, and the gift page tells the story of the sky at that minute.
Why does Uluru change colour?
The iron in the sandstone reflects low-angled sunlight in deep reds and oranges, and the colour shifts as the sun moves and the light passes through more or less dust.
Can you climb Uluru?
No. The climb was closed in 2019 out of respect for the Anangu, for whom it is a sacred place.
