Uluwatu is the south-western tip of Bali, where limestone cliffs drop seventy metres into the Indian Ocean. A temple, Pura Luhur Uluwatu, stands right on the edge, one of the island’s guardian temples against the spirits of the sea.

Uluwatu faces west, so it is known for its sunsets. Every evening the sun goes down into the ocean beyond the surf breaks, and at the temple a Kecak fire dance begins as the sky turns red. The mornings are calm and gentle, with the cliffs lit from behind.

A sunset over Uluwatu is a gift of the ocean — the light going down over endless water from the edge of an island.

The best season

The dry season from April to October brings clear skies and sunsets straight into the sea. The wet season from November to March has more cloud, often with dramatic colours after rain.

Where to watch

The cliff paths around the temple face west over the ocean. Single Fin and the beaches below the cliffs look out over the surf at sunset.
